I believe myself to be a connoisseur of certain things - lot the least of which is pizza. In my opinion, Even Bad Pizza Is Good. It can be considered nature's most perfect food. Crust - carbs. Sauce - Vegetables. Cheese - dairy. Pepperoni - Protein. You've got 4 of the food groups in your average pizza, and some actually go so far as to add Fruit as well. No matter what your favorite pizza, it is important to look at each to pair it properly with the correct beverage. Here are some of my favorites:
The Classic Margarita Pizza - just sauce, basil and mozzarella cheese. Simple, elegant and overwhelmingly Italian. I pair it with a nice Chianti.
The Barbecue Chicken Pizza - piquant sauce, moist chicken and cheddar cheese. Holds up well to the bolder flavor of a heavier beer such a Leinenkugle Sunset Wheat.
The Hawaiian Pizza - usually featuring ham and pineapple. What goes better with fruit than more fruit? My pick is the Pyramid Apricot Ale.
The Pittsburgh Pie (a/k/a Primanti Pizza) - found only here to the best of my knowledge. Chipped steak, french fries, cheese and with crisp cole slaw added just before serving. Yes, I know it sounds weird, but try it! The flavors of this pizza cannot be overwhelmed with something strong, so I go for a crisp, cold Penn Pilsner - also made here in the 'burgh by Penn Brewing.
The frozen pizza - everybody has one in their freezer. It usually winds up tasting like cardboard, but will do in a pinch. As I say, even bad pizza is good. This one gets paired with Iron City Beer (a/k/a Iron @!$%#ty or Swill). Neither taste good, but hey, man does not live by gormet pizza alone!
So what's your favorite combo?
