America is a wasteful country. There is no doubt about it. Though I try to do my best to help the environment, I must admit to being guilty of throwing away things which not too many years ago, we would have just fixed.
Just yesterday I took 3 lamps out to the garbage because they were "broken". Does anyone know how EASY and cheap it is to fix a lamp? A 69 cent part and 15 minutes would have done the trick, but instead I threw them away.
Shoes used to be resoled. Now we pitch them out. Even big-ticket items like televisions get chucked aside instead of calling for a repairman. And a VCR? Forget it! They're less than $30 new, why should we fix them?
What have we become? And more importantly, what is becoming of all the stuff we throw away instead of fix?
