Cocktail Hour at the wedding - Sophisticated and Classy, or a Waste of Money?

I don't have a choice.  The ceremony is AT the reception venue so we've gotta do something for that hour or so when the bride and groom will have pictures taken.  However, at OUR Cocktail Hour, there will be cheese & crackers, a fruit tray and some cookies.  Why spend $15 a dozen on trays of hors d'oeurves so that folks won't be hungry for the main event - the expensive dinner?

Boudicea

This is something thought up by wedding planners and caterers - not by normal people!

Boudicea, I think that is a perfectly acceptable idea. I might also add a vegetable tray and relish tray, but that's just me. :D

Oh yeah, I forgot the veggie tray.

What do you think of cocktail hours in general?

I think they are a waste, but they are pretty much a necessity, UNLESS you have the biggest share of the photos done BEFORE the ceremony. That way, the only pics that need to be taken are the ones of the bride and groom together afterwards. :D

What do you think of cocktail hours in general?

Often too long and if done too up, dinner becomes the boring, but very expensive, ritual. I can't add much to your group Boudicea but I do love weddings and look forward to the big day :)

My own thinks, thinks you're right on the ball, Boudicea. They are not normal people! LOL!

Oh, and right on the same ball with your trays idea too! Capital idea! I've always thought putting out three or four different kinds of crackers is all that's needed to spruce them nicely too! I've even seen home-created cookie trays in there too, for the not-so-health-bothering-to-be-very-consicous crowd!

They all are a heck of a lot cheaper than silly cocktail hours too!

Plus, put the trays on carts, and ask the bride and groom and best man and mail of honor spend that time driving them around serving the guests! Lots of Old World cultural traditions there, the happy couple spending time serving and meeting and greeting and thanking all all that stuff! Not to mention fun!

No to paying for a cocktail hour. It's just an hour and what you are providing them during that hour will be enough Boud.
